Why do we need Jesus?

It’s a phrase we hear a lot. “People need Jesus.” It’s true. We tend to attribute the expression to others when we think of the condition of the culture.
Turns out we all need him. But why? Everyone’s answer may differ. Perhaps it’s for a healing. Maybe a wounded relationship, or a financial crisis.
Maybe you need a miracle, and you need Jesus.
People in Jesus’ day needed miracles, too. Many got them. Often when he performed them, he told them “Don’t tell anybody.” I used to wonder why.
I learned it’s because A) He just knew it wasn’t time yet, and he knows all things. And B) He didn’t want people only coming to him for the miracles.
So goes the human condition.
We tend to cry out for Jesus when the we run out of options. We need him for the miracles. Much harder to remember him in the commonplace, or when times aren’t so catastrophic.
When I get up and go to work, I’m not generally thinking, “Jesus, please help me get up and go to work.” When I start the car, “Jesus take the wheel” doesn’t often enter my thinking.
Intellectually, we know we need him. But in practice, we just don’t think about him until it all hits the fan. If we get desperate, we may have a “Come to Jesus” moment.
So why do you need Jesus? Don’t come just for the miracles. Come because he’s all things good. He created everything, and he wants what’s best for you. He holds the words of eternal life.
Where else would we go?
