All the Leaves are Brown

.

California Dreamin’ is considered the Mamas and Papas’ signature song. It was the #1 song on the year-end Billboard Top 100 chart for 1966.

The song dreams of better times and warmer climes. Even today, we can relate to falling leaves and falling temperatures as obvious signs of the changing season.

But what about other indicators? Not just the calendar seasons, but our life seasons.

Like many, as a young man I felt almost indestructible. Yesterday I got a nasty bruise on my arm. I didn’t bump it on anything. I got it from the wind. I actually got a bruise from the wind.

Definitely a change in seasons.

I’ve always been a bit absentminded, and I used to get frustrated about losing my glasses and finding them on top of my head. Last week I found them on top of another person’s head! How does that even happen? That doesn’t even make any sense.

And the sky is gray…

Granted, I’m in the autumn of my years, but this past summer while visiting the Baseball Hall of Fame, I asked an employee where I could find the exhibit for the Big Red Machine. He was an adult. He was a young adult, but a fully grown man.

He puzzled, “Um, we don’t have a Big Red machine, but we have Cokes and Dr Pepper at the snack bar.”

Such a winter’s day.
