We can’t be honest. We can try, and we should. But being 100% honest would mean broken relationships, lost jobs, and possibly world chaos.
It’s because we’re human. We want to be like Christ and we make strides, but we all get caught off guard sometimes and think things like, “I can’t believe she’s wearing that.” Or “if this guy doesn’t stop talking soon I’m going to jump out the window.”
You can’t say that stuff out loud.
Instead we choose our words carefully. We say things like, “Nice haircut” or “That’s interesting.” Both can be true, but they’re not entirely honest.
We call it tact. We call it choosing our battles. We call it “keeping it positive.” Ever heard somebody justify a cruel comment with “I’m just being honest!”
Selfishness disguised as honesty. Meanness calling itself moral correctness.
Use a long pole to balance yourself on the tightrope of honesty.
