It was 2017. I had an opportunity to go on a mission trip with a group to Africa. I made all the plans. I got all the shots. I arranged my schedule. I was set to go. Then I got the word.
“There are Christians being executed in Africa.”
It was in the very region I was headed. I was warned and counseled by trusted friends NOT to go. I didn’t have to be told twice.
I made the difficult call to the trip coordinator. He was disappointed but understanding. He assured me he’s been many times under similar conditions. I admire his bravery and commitment.
I have other qualities.
So now when people talk about their mission trips to Mexico, or Russia, or China, I tell them:
Yeah? Well, I almost went to Africa.
