You’re growing to be more like God, or you’re shrinking into something else. Maybe even something really stinky. But either way, you’re changing. And everything else is too. Only God stays the same.
Not every change is good. Some of it is painful. Like families who grow apart. Not every change is bad. Some of it is beautiful! Like kind words, setting suns, or the key change in “Shout to the Lord.”
Whatever is bad, it’s easy to find a scapegoat. “Those lousy people made me a jerk.” Whatever the good, taking the credit comes naturally. “I’m a good person, and I’m proud of my humility.”
We know we need God in the impossible difficulties. But we need Him in the good moments too. They don’t happen without him. We forget that without Him we’re dust. (And for some that’s generous.)
Whatever the change, you can’t change it. You can only control how you handle it. So the problem is now you. Now you’ve got to get out of your own head and be content, just as we’re instructed to do.
To somehow imagine we’ll be content when all our problems work out is a fantasy. It makes more sense to imagine you’re going to fly to Neptune, or that the Grammy Awards will be wholesome.
So be content now. Count your blessings now. Maybe you could name them in order of importance, or chronologically. Or in categories. Or alphabetize them. Doesn’t matter. But go ahead. Start. We’ll wait.
……. Feel better?
