The Enemy

I’m my own worst enemy. My nature is to focus on me. But it never ends well. If, with God’s help, I can shift my attention to the Lord, peace invariably comes.

Example: Why would I trust a guy who leaves the house without his wallet, goes back to pick it up, lays down his phone, and drives off without it? Is this the guy you’d recommend for your well-being?

I think not.

Or how about someone who, about every 6 months, shows up to work with his shirt on inside out? Would you trust him to secure your peace?

Of course not. You’d be a fool. You’d be, well, me.

Knowing my checkered past, I continue to launch into my days with a passive attitude. “Oh sure, I’m a believer. I’ll pray and read my Bible soon.”

Somewhere (everywhere) Jesus is laughing and crying.

Isn’t it incredible we have access to the Creator? We humans can act like it’s this unattainable level. Because we can’t see or hear him, we put him in the back of our minds.

Maybe not the best metaphor, but it reminds me of magic. Let’s call it “supernatural” so nobody gets upset. We have this other-worldly power within our grasp to go outside cultural norms. We can love scoundrels. We can forgive murderers. We can rise above devastation with joy.

That doesn’t just happen! There’s no rational explanation. Yet we see it all the time in believers.

The widows, the terminally ill, the bankrupt. The Cowboy fans. (Sorry.) How can all these victims of dire straits endure such plight with radiance and mirth?

The Holy Spirit, that’s how! Talk about super powers! Even now I’m comforted in my crisis.

Right now. Give your predicament to God. It may be difficult. But it’ll be worth it. You may not see immediate results, but your hindsight will be incredible!

People like to say “Don’t beat yourself up.” I get it, but let’s get crazy and go the other way.

Let’s finish off the enemy.

“I no longer live. But Christ lives in me.”
