So much of the Christian life is emulating Jesus. As we spend time with Him, we grow to be more like Him. This is useful in tough times. “What would Jesus do?” is a common go-to phrase.
We know to be unselfish, loving, and giving, especially in difficult circumstances. We know to “be like Jesus”. The challenge is, we’re still human.
We speak tersely when we’re tired. We get defensive when we’re criticized. We want to be Christlike, but our selfish nature always has a way of returning.
These two forces are forever at odds with each other. Paul knew it. So do we. Romans 7 says, “What I want to do, I don’t do. What I don’t want to do, I do. Who can rescue me?”
“Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
Yes, our old self will still show up. But the more we lean on Him, the more He shows up. We just have to keep going back to Him.
In the meantime, it’s hard to be human. But what a comfort we have in a faithful God! So don’t give up on Him!
He’ll never give up on you.
