Okay, it’s a lot like MY life. But maybe you can draw some parallels, too.
Consider:
In order to excel at drums, it takes practice. Lots of practice. It’s just like any other skill you develop. But the same can be said of our relationships! It takes daily effort. It takes giving of your time, your energy, sometimes even your resources. This is certainly true of our relationship with God. In order to keep that connection current, it requires us to be proactive and consistent. Schedule the time to cultivate that relationship!
In order to excel at drums in the context of a group setting, we must be a team player, and be willing to be a support to others. Sometimes you get the solo, but don’t hog it! Your primary purpose is to play a servant’s role. You want to be there for your fellow band mates. Similarly, when it comes to our relationship with God, we certainly are in a subordinate role. More than that, anything but a humble position creates a disaster waiting to happen.
Finally, in order to excel at drums, we have to listen. It can’t simply be all about us, as much as it may be our subconscious and unintentional desire to make it so. Listen to what your guitar player is doing, and try to enhance it. Listen to the keyboard player for rhythm cues. Watch and listen to the leader’s signal to change direction. It’s easy to be caught up in the moment and miss a dramatic pause or a climactic ending. The song, just like life, can change in a split second.
So I suppose there really are a lot of ways playing drums is much like life! Overall, just be sensitive to the song. The song your Creator designed for you!
And don’t play too loud! (So you can hear the Lead Singer!)
“Humble yourself before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” James 4:10
