Maybe you’ve seen drummers and thought, “I’d love to do that.” Maybe you’ve thought, “I COULD do that.” You’re right. You could.
Whether you’ve got drums and have been playing a while, or you’ve never sat behind a set, there are some basic moves you can learn to play nearly any rock or country song. It’s all about groove.
When you hear a song, you feel a beat. It all starts with tapping along to it, then gradually adding another hand, then a foot. It really is that easy.
What’s not easy, are the amazing tricks and fills you see the pros do. That takes years. The problem with many young drummers is they try to jump to the tricks before learning the basics.
Don’t get ahead of the game. Here’s the game:
1) Learn the basic beats.
2) Nail the audition.
3) Develop as you go.
You don’t need many fills. Your band doesn’t want you to do many anyway. The ones you do should be carefully selected and conservative so you can land them consistently. More often, let your fills fall into the groove.
Don’t fall for the trap and solo your way right out of making the band. Keep it simple. Take it easy. Don’t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy.
I can show you how.
